Cryptic sulfur cycling during the formation of giant gypsum deposits

چکیده
Salt giants are large-scale, basin-wide deposits formed sporadically in the geological past, from early Paleozoic to late Cenozoic. Their role as sinks for seawater dissolved ions is well known, however biogeochemical conditions that accompany salt giant formation and their effects on carbon cycling remain poorly constrained. Here we show massive gypsum of Mediterranean – youngest Earth a particularly dynamic environment controlled by orbitally-driven climate oscillations at precessional scale. Using multiple sulfur isotopes combined with steady-state cycle model, that, prior precipitation, more than 80% its constituting sulfate was first microbially reduced into sulfide, possibly stored elemental sulfur, then almost completely reoxidized back sulfate. This “cryptic” contemporaneous precipitation implies both negligible net consumption sulfide production, despite significant benthic flux organic remineralized through microbial reduction. known evidence cryptic past.

Cryptic carbon and sulfur cycling between surface ocean plankton.
About half the carbon fixed by phytoplankton in the ocean is taken up and metabolized by marine bacteria, a transfer that is mediated through the seawater dissolved organic carbon (DOC) pool. The chemical complexity of marine DOC, along with a poor understanding of which compounds form the basis of trophic interactions between bacteria and phytoplankton, have impeded efforts to identify key cur...
متن کاملSulfur deposits in Ochoan rocks of the Gypsum Plain, southeast New Mexico and West Texas
Every fall since 1950, the New Mexico Geological Society (NMGS) has held an annual Fall Field Conference that explores some region of New Mexico (or surrounding states). Always well attended, these conferences provide a guidebook to participants. Besides detailed road logs, the guidebooks contain many well written, edited, and peer-reviewed geoscience papers. These books have set the national s...

simulation and experimental studies for prediction mineral scale formation in oil field during mixing of injection and formation water
abstract: mineral scaling in oil and gas production equipment is one of the most important problem that occurs while water injection and it has been recognized to be a major operational problem. the incompatibility between injected and formation waters may result in inorganic scale precipitation in the equipment and reservoir and then reduction of oil production rate and water injection rate. ...
